Today, “Mare“ is one of the oldest restaurants in the Kornatiarchipelago and the story of “Mare” is also the story of Telašćicaand Kornati. “Mare” is, in the truest sense of the word, a cult place of Kornati.
The restaurantwas named after Mare Šešelja,néeMatulić, who married Ante Šešelja in Proversa in 1914. During sea storms the fishermen would always come to Mare’s house, it was their shelter which provided them with safeberths and a fireplace.
When sailors started to sail in the areain 1962,today’s location of the restaurant was recognized by Sali agricultural cooperative and they decided to open a store there. Tonina, Mare’s daughter-in-law, consequently started to work in the store with her husband Ivo. Tonina is known as Mare even today.
In the 1970sTonina and her husband with their sons Vjekoslav and Vlado went one step further and started to cook fish that they bought from the fishermen. The fish they made at the time was not the highest quality, mostly mackerel and sardines. They also drank homemade wine.
Today’s hosts in Proversa are Mare’s grandson Vjekoslav and his wife Nela. Nela is also called Mare, but instead of mackerel and sardines, the restaurant serves sea bass and grouper. The same goes for homemade wine which has been replaced by Croatia’s most exquisite wines over the course of time.
Due to the fact that large sailing boats have replaced small boats, a small marina has been built in front of the restaurant. The marina has more than 20 berths which are supplied with electricity and water. You cannot finda sailor who has not stopped by our restaurant, tried our specialties and tied his boat to the dock.
But many of them have left without hearing the story about Mare.
